How do I get my company mentioned by ChatGPT?
The short answer
ChatGPT names companies it has read about in sources it already trusts. Ahrefs' September 2026 analysis puts Reddit and Wikipedia at the top of its cited domains, and 5W's 2026 citations report found brand search volume predicts citation better than backlinks. So: answer your buyers' literal questions on your site, get named on third-party sites, and measure by citation rate.
Why this is a different problem from ranking on Google
When a buyer asks ChatGPT "who should I hire to build a sales process for a $5M company," it does not return ten links. It writes a paragraph that names two or three companies. There is no page two, and the buyer usually does not ask again. OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, according to TechCrunch, with 50 million paying subscribers — enough that for many B2B categories the assistant is now a step in the buying process, not a novelty. And the visitors who do arrive from an assistant are unusually qualified: Semrush's 2025 traffic study put the average LLM visitor at 4.4 times the value of the average organic search visitor, measured by conversion rate.
The mechanics differ from search in one way that matters. Google ranks pages. ChatGPT synthesizes an answer from what it has read in training and what it can fetch at the moment of the question, and it decides which brands to name based on how often and how consistently it has encountered them. You cannot buy a position, and you cannot get there with one very good page. You get there by being the obvious answer across the sources it reads.
What ChatGPT actually reads
Ahrefs tracks the domains ChatGPT cites across a broad set of US queries. Their September 2026 update shows a source mix that surprises most B2B marketers:
| Rank | Domain | Share of ChatGPT citations |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | reddit.com | 16.8% |
| 2 | en.wikipedia.org | 7.0% |
| 3 | consumerreports.org | 3.7% |
| 4 | forbes.com | 3.1% |
| 8 | youtube.com | 2.5% |
The rest of the top fifty is reference sites, review and comparison sites, retailers, health databases and LinkedIn. Your own website is not on the list, and neither is any competitor's — which is the point. ChatGPT builds its picture of a category largely from third parties, and it treats community discussion and reference material as more trustworthy than a vendor's homepage. 5W's 2026 State of AI Citations report, drawing on Profound's dataset of 680 million citations across ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity, adds a second finding: ChatGPT mentions brands roughly 3.2 times more often than it links to them. Being named and being cited are different events, and the first one happens far more often than the second.
That report also identifies the strongest known predictor of being cited: brand search volume, at a correlation of 0.334, materially stronger than backlinks. Ahrefs' May 2025 study of 75,000 brands found the same shape in Google's AI Overviews, where branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlink count. Both studies are careful to say correlation is not causation. But the direction is consistent across two independent datasets: assistants name companies the web already talks about.
The five things that move a citation rate
The work splits into what you publish on your own site and what exists about you everywhere else. Both are necessary; neither is sufficient.
First, publish one page per literal question your buyers ask, with a direct 40–60 word answer at the top and specifics — prices, timeframes, named categories — in the body. Assistants quote pages that commit to numbers and skip pages that hedge. This page and every page in the Answers hub are written that way.
Second, make those pages readable to the crawlers. Server-rendered HTML, so
the answer is in the initial page rather than loaded by JavaScript; a
robots.txt that admits GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User by name; an
llms.txt at the root that describes what the company is in plain text. A
page that is invisible to the fetcher cannot be cited no matter how good it
is.
Third, get named where ChatGPT already reads. Answer real questions in the Reddit communities and forums your buyers use, with your company named in the answer where it is honestly relevant. Get written about on the industry and comparison sites that already show up in the citation list for your category. Keep your LinkedIn company page and directory listings describing the company the same way your site does. Consistency across three sources beats polish on one.
Fourth, keep publishing. Ahrefs' July 2025 analysis of nearly 17 million cited URLs found ChatGPT's citations averaged 958 days old against 1,432 for Google's organic results, and that both ChatGPT and Perplexity tend to cite newer content first. A page written once in 2023 and never touched is competing against one updated last quarter.
Fifth, be specific about what you are. Assistants struggle to name a company they cannot categorize. "Sales software and fractional sales leadership for founder-led B2B companies in Glendale, Arizona" is a sentence a model can file and retrieve. "We help businesses grow" is not.
How to know whether it worked
Ask ChatGPT the same question five times and you will get five different answers, so a single check tells you almost nothing. The measurement that means something is a citation rate: for each question you care about, across repeated samples over weeks, how often is your company named? Ahrefs' brand study found about 26% of the 75,000 brands it examined had zero AI Overview mentions at all, and that the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI mentions — more than ten times the next quartile down. Moving from the first group to the second is a visible, countable change, and it usually takes months of the work above, not weeks. Anyone promising you a mention by Friday is selling a screenshot.
Where SalesARC fits
ArcClaw™ AEO is SalesARC's answer-engine service. It builds the list of questions your buyers ask assistants, samples each one repeatedly and reports your citation rate per question, then does the publishing above: articles, forum answers and FAQ pages on your site, reported next to your Google visibility. Basic ($499/mo) tracks 50 questions with weekly sampled checks, 3–7 articles and 3–7 forum posts a week, and five FAQ or blog articles on your site a month; Standard ($1,499/mo) tracks 100 or more with re-checks that fire when new content publishes. SalesARC's own AEO runs on the same module, and the Answers hub you are reading is its output.
